When most people think of Orlando, Florida, theme parks like Disney World and Universal Studios typically come to mind. However, this vibrant city offers so much more beyond these famous attractions. If you’re looking to venture beyond our theme parks, here are 16 lesser-known things to do in Orlando Florida you shouldn’t miss.

And if you need a place to stay, check out our flagship Orange Lake Resort in Orlando FL, which features great activities and amenities like a pool, lazy river, mini golf, and sport courts.

The Orlando Science Center is a must-visit for curious minds of all ages–but it’s especially great for kids 12 and younger. One of the top kids science centers in America, the Orlando Science Center features interactive exhibits, live science demonstrations, and an observatory.

While it’s hard to pick the best exhibits in this massive science center, highlights include the Orange Grove, where kids can move, sort, stock, and pick plastic “oranges” throughout the citrus grove–inspired space. The Isaacs Family Climb Time is an indoor climbing area with plenty of room to explore. In DinoDigs, visitors can learn about prehistoric creatures and see replicas of dinosaur fossils. Many courses are set within beautiful natural surroundings, offering stunning views, lush landscaping, and a serene atmosphere. Whether you’re looking to improve your game with professional coaching or simply enjoy a relaxing day on the course, Orlando is a golfer’s paradise.

Having trouble deciding where to play? Golf Digest has a list of 10 of the best courses in and around the city.

And remember, you don’t have to leave Orange Lake Resort to experience a championship golf course. The Legends at Orange Lake in Orlando is an 18-hole, Arnold Palmer Signature Designed championship course. Play a round (or two, or more!) surrounded by towering pines and majestic oaks, with Scottish-style golf featured on the front nine and flowing water and Carolina-esque fairways on the back nine.

There’s also two additional golf courses: The Reserve and Crane’s Bend in West Village. And if you want to improve your game, check out McCord-Brown Golf Academy, which offers private instruction, group classes and clinics throughout the day.

Bonus! Attractions Just Outside of Orlando, FL for 2025

If you’re willing to drive a little bit outside the city, these attractions can add some great family fun to your vacation. Check out this list of Central Florida attractions for even more things to do.

  • Drive the two-mile loop at Wild Florida to see 150 exotic animals, including wildebeest and zebras.
  • Kayak through glowing water off Cape Canaveral. Seasonally, the waters of Indian River and Mosquito Lagoon literally glow when your oar hits the water due to bioluminescent dinoflagellates. There are lots of places that offer tours, including A Day Away. The best time to see the neon water is at nighttime from June through early October.
  • Enjoy a day at the beach. Head east for the Space Coast sands and warm water of Cocoa Beach, one the best Florida beaches, and its signature pier. The quieter New Smyrna Beach has an adorable downtown nearby and ice cream stands just about everywhere. Daytona Beach is extremely popular, with boardwalk rides a few steps from the sand and live music concerts at an outdoor bandshell.
  • Visit the Kennedy Space Center for an unforgettable look at space exploration. While the center itself is more than enough to keep you entertained, they also have a list of 2025 events on their website here.
  • Take a break from screen time by spending a day at Lake Louisa State Park, a quick 20-minute drive from Orange Lake Resort. Hike, walk, bike, or horseback ride along the 20 miles of unpaved trails that wind through the park.
  • Venture over to Little Big Econ State Forest, where you can hike the stunning landscape.
  • See manatees at Blue Spring State Park, especially in cooler seasons.
  • While technically part of the theme parks we promised to avoid, Disney and Universal have excellent water parks that often get overlooked in favor of the rides and attractions of the main parks. Typhoon Lagoon and Blizzard Beach are Disney Parks, while Universal Studios has Volcano Bay. Each one is filled with body slides, tube slides, lazy rivers, play areas, wave pools, and so much more. Plus, tickets start at $74, which means you save a bundle over a traditional park ticket.
